The short version
- No account is required to use Map of Grid, and we do not ask for or collect your location.
- Map data describes infrastructure, not people. U.S. layers are government open data (EIA, HIFLD via DOT/BTS NTAD, U.S. Census). Canadian plants and border crossings are federal open data under the Open Government Licence – Canada (NACEI, CanVec). Mexican NACEI rows use that same licence. Mexican CNE permits are CC BY 4.0. Canadian, Mexican, and rest-of-world transmission lines are © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). The world lines (≥220 kV) are kept in their own folder, separate from the Canada and Mexico extracts.
- Your cookie choice and the once-a-day free trace counter are saved in your browser’s local storage, on your device only.
- Ads load only if you are not a Pro subscriber, that placement has an ad unit, and you choose Accept. An unfilled unit is removed rather than left as an empty box. Pro does not load the advertising script or the consent banner. Essential only keeps the full map working with no ad cookies.
Advertising
Map of Grid is free and may be supported by advertising, including Google AdSense. If you accept, Google and its partners may use cookies or similar identifiers to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalized advertising at Google Ads Settings and learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Third-party services
- Basemap tiles: CARTO (© CARTO, © OpenStreetMap contributors) — your browser requests map tiles from their servers.
- Fonts: Google Fonts.
- Accounts: sign-in with an email magic link, email and password, or Google, through a Supabase project used only by Map of Grid. We store your email, Stripe customer id, and subscription status on
public.profiles. The publishable key in the browser cannot read other people’s rows, and it cannot grant Pro. Google receives the sign-in only if you choose that button. - Payments: Stripe processes Pro checkout ($8/month or $79/year) on its own page. We never see your full card number. Paying unlocks Pro when the webhook records an active or trialing subscription on your profile.
- Hosting: our web host may keep standard server logs (IP address, user agent) for security and operations.
- Markets: opening the Markets page loads the company directory from this site. It does not fetch stock or commodity prices. A company-site or SEC link, if you follow it, leaves this site. For one Texas power print, the host may request ERCOT’s public dashboard. No account and no API key are required. An older browser copy of prices, if one was saved before, is deleted and is not shown.
Pro waitlist
If you enter your email to hear about Pro, we use it only to tell you about Map of Grid Pro and you can ask to be removed at any time.
Data accuracy
Map of Grid shows installed capacity and approximate transmission-line locations from public datasets. It does not show real-time power flows, ISO dispatch, or distribution lines. Not for operational, safety, or investment decisions.
